Born
in a time when becoming a veterinarian was not considered a viable
vocation for a young woman, Pat Coleby did not let her parents’
veto of her preferred career choice deter her from being near the
animals she loved. As a young girl she worked her way from the bottom
up at a top racing yard in England, where she began her lifelong
observation of well-managed horse care. Later, upon immigrating
to Australia, she found herself helping the area landlords with
their goats, sheep, cattle and horses. Working closely with the
University of Melbourne as she tended the needs of her district,
Coleby began to realize that conventional veterinary medicine was
far from a cure-all. Prevention of ill health through good nutrition
that ensured proper dosages of vitamins and minerals was key to
the animals’ well being. And when poor nutrition yielded poor animal
health, Coleby was able to prescribe non-invasive, natural remedies
that resulted in amazing, seemingly miraculous cures of animals
whose cases conventional veterinary wisdom would abandon. As the
news of the success of her natural treatments spread, Coleby quickly
became known as a resource for farmers all over her district, and
soon throughout Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom as
an expert on holistic animal care.
The recent publication
of North American editions of her books, Natural Horse Care,
Natural Goat Care, and Natural Cattle Care, by Acres
U.S.A. makes Coleby’s holistic "from the soil up" approach to
livestock health available to breeders and farmers outside of Australia.
