Acres U.S.A. Magazine Writer’s Guidelines

Acres U.S.A. is a magazine written by passionate people who have a sincere interest in the principles of sustainable and organic agriculture. Most of what we print comes from people who have learned their lessons the hard way — with hands-on experience, trial and error, and a willingness to seek out the information they need to get results. Our writers are the farmers, ranchers, consultants and researchers busy innovating in the field, as well as insightful freelancers who recognize innovation, know the right questions to ask, and can clearly and accurately tell the story.

Real-World Applications

We welcome submissions about farmers, ranchers and market gardeners who have found ways to survive and thrive in an agribusiness climate that favors vertical integration and the demise of individual thinkers. Our readers look for sophisticated tools to better produce in concert with nature. We want to read about inroads into large-scale commercial production, and we want to know exactly how these things are done. The more reproducible a success story is, the more valuable it is to our readers.

Our Audience

We present articles that are of interest to a wide range of people involved in all aspects of agricultural production — from backyard gardeners to huge row-crop farming operations — with special emphasis on commercial-scale production. Soil fertility management; tillage; composting; cropping; holistic livestock management, veterinary care and grazing practices; marketing and business management tips for all levels of production; holistic human health in keeping with a cleaner food supply — these are just a few of the topics Acres U.S.A. covers in an effort to bring readers information they can find nowhere else in such detail and abundance.

What We’re Looking For

The articles most likely to fit our needs are original, factual reportage (e.g., farm profiles) and practical, hands-on information about soil management and natural farming practices, especially innovative practices and cutting-edge research. Our readers like to learn production details (application rates of fertilizers, specific brands of amendments, depth of tillage, cover crop see mixes, etc.). The ideal feature article will average 1,000-3,000 words in length, with concise presentation and plenty of detail on practices, materials and results. We are primarily interested in new, first-run pieces. If the story has previously appeared in another publication or online, or if it has been submitted to other markets, please inform the editor when you submit the piece. Submissions sent via email as Microsoft Word files are preferred. We reserve the right to edit submissions for length or clarity. Feel free to contact us with any applicable query. We will do our best to respond quickly.
