  • Dane Terrill: Earthworm Power, Vermicompost & Vermicompost Teas in Agriculture MP3

The biological and crop nutrition qualities of worm castings is legendary in organic gardening circles. Making these biological workhorses function in production agriculture has for many remained just a dream. This longtime vermicompost pro will explain how to create top-quality vermicompost and brew that into a high-quality compost tea to be utilized on crops, in greenhouses, or in market gardens. Scale of operation does not need to preclude uses of this powerful, low-cost, farm-made biological material.

Dane Terrill comes to eco-agriculture through two long-standing pillars of the organic community, Flowerfield Enterprises and Crop Services International. Flowerfield Enterprises, founded in 1971 by Mary Appelhof, is a leader in the vermicomposting industry. A compost tea component was added in 2005, brewing and applying biologically rich compost teas to residential yards, gardens and athletic fields. Dane consults with farmers, superintendents and greenhouse growers. Flowerfield performs biological tests on compost and compost teas in their lab. Crop Services International, founded by Dr. Phil Wheeler over 35 years ago, offers a complete farm program utilizing state-of-the-art eco-agriculture. CSI specializes in transitioning conventional growers to sustainable, organic methods on four continents. Dane’s background in designing and maintaining a golf course using environmentally friendly practices created in him the need to provide a less toxic environment for his two children and the hundreds of other students that he coached in basketball and golf for 22 years. He holds a bachelor’s of arts degree in business from Albion College. He studied at the Sustainable Studies Institute in Corvallis, Oregon. He speaks widely on soil biology, vermiculture, soil science, compost teas, and the value of returning bacteria, fungi, protozoa and nematodes to the soil, helping growers maintain or increase yields while reducing or eliminating inorganic fertilizers and pesticides.

  • Joel Salatin: Winners & Losers in an Acres U.S.A. Economy

What would an Acres U.S.A. economy look like? Where would all the chemical company workers go? What would happen to the unemployed veterinarians and doctors? What would happen to McDonald's and Tyson? With his classic satire and humor, Salatin explains that an Acres U.S.A. economy would create a completely different culture. From local-centric food to collapsing casinos, this new economy would showcase an entirely new set of values ─ how exciting. Meet the amazing farmer behind Polyface Farms Learn More

  • André Leu: Pesticides & Children’s Health

Join the president of IFOAM, the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements, to really learn about the dangers of synthetic pesticides. Numerous scientific studies show that current regulatory systems around the world have failed to protect unborn and growing children from exposure to a massive cocktail of toxic pesticides. This group is the most vulnerable to the harm caused by chemicals. As young children they have the highest levels of pesticide exposure due to their food consumption in relation to their body weight. Of particular concern is that the fetus and newborn possess lower concentrations of protective serum proteins than adults. A major consequence of this vulnerability is a greater susceptibility to cancers and developmental neurotoxicity, where the poison damages the developing nervous system. They are more vulnerable than adults to the effects of endocrine disrupters because their tissues and organs are still developing and rely on balanced hormone signals to ensure that they develop in orderly sequences. Small disruptions in these hormone signals by endocrine-disrupting chemicals can significantly alter the way these body parts and metabolic systems develop. These altered effects will not only last a lifetime; they can be passed on to future generations. Learn More

  • Don Huber: The Shocking New Science Behind GMOs & Herbicides

Dr. Don Huber returns to the podium for this long-form session addressing the continuing failures and faulty science behind biotech-based agriculture. Learn how GMOs interact with glyphosate with devastating results in soil, plant, animal and human health. Learn of recent studies piling more damning evidence on this form of farming proponents arrogantly call “settled science.” Nothing could be further from the truth. He will update attendees on the state of the science behind the now-ubiquitous nutrient-blocking chemical glyphosate drawing from validated scientific research from around the world and discuss the implications of resurrecting 2,4-D which seems to be inevitable. Don Huber is professor emeritus of plant pathology at Purdue University. His agricultural research the past 50 years has focused on the epidemiology and control of soilborne plant pathogens with emphasis on microbial ecology, cultural and biological controls, and physiology of host-parasite relationships. Research also includes nitrogen metabolism, micronutrient physiology, inhibition of nitrification, and nutrient-disease interactions. In addition to his academic positions and research, he is internationally recognized for his expertise in the development of nitrification inhibitors to improve the efficiency of N fertilizers, interactions of the form of nitrogen, manganese and other nutrients in disease, herbicide-nutrient-disease interactions, techniques for rapid microbial identification, and cultural control of plant diseases.
