1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Introductory Level sessions
On-Farm Water Management - Mark Shepard
Grand Ballroom C

Mark Shepard, author of Restoration Agriculture and Water for Any Farm, will lead a lively discussion about how to manage water — whether you have too much or too little. Learn how to make a change that will positively impact generations to come. Learn techniques around how to channel water through high-fertility areas, store water through smart land management, or drain water properly without losing valuable topsoil. You will walk away with specific tactics you can employ immediately to store or drain water from your land.

Foundations of Soil Biology - Dennis Warnecke & Steve Becker
Grand Ballroom D/E

As Tainio Biologicals founder Bruce Tainio used to say, “Soil microorganisms are the key link between mineral resources and plant growth.” As scientific methods have evolved, this linkage has become more and more evident. A plant relies heavily on its microbiome for: proper function, growth, health, and production. Without these microscopic “friends” plant life (as well as all other life on Earth) would look very different and many ecological systems would collapse. During this session, Dennis and Steve will take an in-depth look at the relationship between soil biology and plant health, and explore ways to use this key component for crop success.

3 p.m. – 5 p.m
Introductory Level sessions
Wake Up Your Soil With Weeds - Vail Dixon
Grand Ballroom C

When weed seeds germinate, it’s a signal that the conditions are right for soil biology to prioritize that plant in the ecosystem. Understanding why weeds are there and how they work to transform soil helps us design the most efficient and effective way to work with them to change the soil and growing system. The fun begins when we can finally stop fighting them and create what we want. This session goes deep into real world case studies to give you ideas of what works in grazing, cropping and vegetable systems, and what doesn’t.

Growing Top-Shelf Food for Chefs - Marty Travis and a Cincinnati Chef
Grand Ballroom D/E

Do you want to explore the business of supplying restaurants your farm products? The most important aspect is developing a strong, long lasting friendship with the chef. Come and understand what it takes from the chef side and the farmer side to have a successful farm to chef experience. Marty Travis, farmer and the author of My Farmer, My Customer, and one of his chef colleagues in Cincinnati, will lead the discussion about how to sell into a premium market.

KEYNOTE: David Montgomery & Anne Biklé
Grand Ballroom C

What Your Food Ate: David and Anne will entertain the audience by sharing information from their latest book.

A grand synthesis of science, history, and visits to farms reveals the connections between soil health and human health. The pathway runs through the bodies of crops, animals, and microbiomes into our own, showing that agriculture can not only feed the world, but nourish it too.

You will walk away motivated and able to connect the dots between human health, soil health, animal health and crop health. As Montgomery says, “It’s a lot of dots to connect, but we’ve done the homework.”

Do Not Underestimate the Impact of Restoring the Health & Diversity of Your Soil's Microbiome! - Dr. David Johnson & Hui-Chun Su Johnson
Grand Ballroom C

David C Johnson, PhD, and his wife, Hui-Chun Su Johnson, are the co-creators of the Johnson/Su Compost BioReactor.

Dr. Johnson has opened a new window for viewing the interdependence between plants and soil microbes as a system. Hear Dr. Johnson discuss how he developed the BEAM process, Biologically Enhanced Agricultural Management. David and his wife, Hui-Chun Su Johnson, will also talk about
the construction, filling, and management of the

Optimization of these plant-microbe associations promotes:

  • Restoration of soil fertility
  • Improved growth of crops
  • Increased Plant-Water-Use Efficiency and Soil’s Water Holding Capacity
  • Increased Soil Microbial-Carbon-Use Efficiencies and Soil Carbon Storage Capabilities.

These benefits provide a path with appropriate practices to significantly increase farm and ranch productivity and profitability due to better plant, soil, and ecosystem health. Rebuilding a healthy living soil, soil’s microbial community population, structure, diversity and biological functionality, will also provide a robust and practical mechanism to reduce atmospheric CO2 within a regenerative agricultural system.

Radically Traditional Farming, One Family, One Farm, Six Generations – Will Harris
Grand Ballroom D/E

Will Harris will take you on his 30-year journey to a different way of producing food.

White Oak Pastures is a six generation, 152-year-old family farm in Bluffton, Georgia. Starting in 1995, they transitioned away from industrial agriculture techniques and began operating their farm as a living ecosystem. They now raise 10 species of humanely treated animals living in symbiotic relationships with each other. Their lands are holistically managed to become increasingly a living organic medium that is teeming with life. They take pride in farming practices that focus on regenerative land management, humane animal husbandry, and revitalizing their rural community. They know radically traditional farming creates products that are better for the land, their livestock and their village. They are fiercely proud of their zero- waste production system that utilizes each part of the animals they pasture-raise and hand-butcher on their farm.

Lessons from a Lifetime of Biological Farming - Gary Zimmer
Grand Ballroom C/D/E

Gary Zimmer, “father” of biological agriculture, will guide you through the lessons he has learned throughout his 50+ years of biological farming. As Burke Teichert once said, “if you’ve been farming the same way for 10 years, you’ve had one year of experience 10 times.” Throughout Gary’s lifetime of biological farming, he has continued to learn and is always experimenting with new things: new types of crops, acroecology, perennial crops, or just the best use of the land for the current climate and soil conditions. Learn from a seasoned and successful farmer and consultant why there’s a lot more to soils than just the numbers on the soil report and how you can use this information to elevate your operation into a profitable and healthy operation.

How do we take the lessons learned in agriculture and move regenerative agriculture forward with the next generation?

U.S. farmers, ranchers, and producers are growing older. The average age of U.S. farm producers is 57.5 years old and this age has been increasing over the years. Our nation is going to become reliant on younger producers to take the reins.

There are big shoes to fill.

Our panelists are lighting the way.

Will Harris of White Oak Pastures, with his success in building a fruitful and sustainable legacy to pass on for generations to come, will moderate this session.

Lydia Dresbach of Dresbach Farms is part of three generations of her family farming together in Southern Ohio. Using regenerative has become a focus of their farm in stewarding the land to the best of their ability.

Mac Kincaid, Young Regenerative Producer of the Year, despite his young age, is already a success story, transitioning his farm to 100% zero-tilled, 100% cover cropped, and livestock-integrated operation of almost 1,000 acres.

Indiana Farmer, Jason Mauck, is blazing a new path using cash and cover crops in unison. Jason works 3,000 acres and holds the Indiana state record for the highest yield per acre of soybeans. He looks at agriculture through a different lens with the next generation in mind.

Organic Hog production - Rick Carr and Sara Major

Most pigs raised in the United States are housed in commercial confinement operations with poor conditions that restrict innate behaviors that are associated with chronic stress. Animal welfare is improved when pigs are given outdoor access, but raising pigs outdoors presents additional obstacles. In this workshop, Rodale Institute employees will give an overview of the benefits and challenges of pastured pork production.

Farm Business
Capital Resources to Fund Regen Farmers… and the Systems Around Them – Angela Blatt & Sarah Day Levesque
Grand Ballroom D/E

Investment in food and agriculture-related businesses is essential to increase capacity in local food economies. While there is a tremendous amount of capital flowing to agriculture, historically the proportion supporting regenerative farming has been limited. Events during the past few years, and 2022 in particular, have shown a small but noticeable increase in local food systems investments. This session will explore the types of public and private capital that can support regenerative farmers and provide case studies that show how capital has been utilized to expand their efforts within the food system.
